If you've chosen to head to sunnier climes to have your wedding perhaps on the beach or in hotel gardens, you will need to choose your beauty products wisely to ensure that your makeup stays looking flawless all day long and doesn't melt in the heat, whilst also protecting you from the sun! Here are some of the products which we'd recommend brides-to-be put on their shopping list before jetting off for their wedding, or honeymoon, to ensure that they can easily and flawlessly create perfect-looking, long-lasting, heat-withstanding, sun-protecting wedding makeup!

Sun Protection

imageFirst things first, you need to protect your skin as you won't want to have sun burn and peeling on your big day. Sun protection is important in the days and weeks leading up to your wedding as well as on the day itself. If you like to have a tan build one up gradually and safely to protect your skin. Use a sun protection cream such as Soltan and start by using a high factor for the first few days, such as SPF 30, and then go onto a lower factor.

If you wish to stay completely tan-free use a strong SPF 50 product such as Avene's High Protection Mineral Cream SPF 50 (£13.50).

Exfoliate and Moisturise

imageYou should also exfoliate regularly when gradual tanning to remove dead skin cells and improve your tan. Pevonia Botanica's Ligne Tropicale De-Ageing Salt Mousse (£25) has a heavenly tropical scent, containing papaya and pineapple and also comes with a lushious de-ageing body balm (£55) perfect for firming and conditioning the skin.

With all that tanning be sure to exfoliate your face too to create an even makeup base. We'd highly recommend Alpha H's Micro Cleanse exfoliator (£24.50) which is genetle but effective and great for all skintypes. Plus, it's effects are even better when combined with the Balancing Cleanser (£23).

imageEven in hot weather it is important to moisturise. On the day itself, you will want a light, non-oily light-weight moisturiser; we'd recommend Trilogy Energising Face Lotion (£26) or, for a real luminous glow, Shu Uemura Stage Performer Instant Glow Radiance Perfecting Cream (£35) is fantastic at transforming even he dullest of complexions.

To ensure that your makeup stays put all day and to prevent breakthrough shine (which is more likely in the heat) use a primer underneath your foundation. MAC's Prep+Prime SPF 50 oil-free primer (£21) is an excellent product which keeps makeup in place whilst protecting skin from the sun so even better for those with very pale skin who wish to maintain the English Rose look.

For an outdoor sunny wedding it is best to keep your foundation light and natural with either a tinted moisturiser or light foundation. We love Bobbi Brown's new SPF 15 Tinted Moisturiser (£27) which is oil-free and gives gorgeous subtle colour. It's silky soft texture glides on for easy coverage and gives a radiant finish.

imageIf you suffer from oily skin mineral powder may be better for you. The Body Shop's Nature's Minerals Foundation (£16) is a light mineral loose powder foundation so is also giving your skin the added benefit of nutritious minerals.

Bronzer / Blusher

imageDepending on your preference add a touch of colour to your cheekbones or all-over with a bronzer or blusher. We love The Body Shop's Baked-To-Last Bronzer (£16) and Bobbi Brown's Shimmer Brick (£30.50) - both ideal for highlighting and contouring due to the contrast in colours and shimmery finish.

For a splash of colour, Illamasqua cream blusher (£16.50) is a star buy; providing soft, long lasting colour which is easy to blend.

imageAvoid chapped, lacklustre lips by investing in a moisture rich treatment balm to soothe and repair like DHC's Lip Cream (£5.50) or Aveda's Nourish-Mint Renewing Lip Treatment (£9.90) which also plumps lips.

imagePrime and Line

Create the perfect base for super staying power. A lip primer will give you a smooth texture for applying your colour such as MAC Prep + Prime Lip (£10.50). Line your lips with Aveda Nourish-Mint Lip Definer (£11.70), the colourless formula matches any lip colour and plant waxes seal the lip line to prevent feathering.

imageFor protection to choose a lipstick with an SPF such as Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture (£22.50) which comes in a range of delicious colours from brights to nudes - no.23 Pink Coral (left) is perfect for a fresh, summery bridal makeup.

But if long-wear is your priority, Max Factor Lipfinity lipsticks really do withstand it all from drinking and eating to kissing! Max Factor Lipfinity Nudes Lipstick (£10.99) is gorgeous for subtle colour.

imageLash primer

Lash primers condition and protect lashes and can be worn under mascara or alone. Under mascara they help to boost its effects adding extra length and volume and helping to keep lashes separated. We love Japanese brand DHC's Eyelash Tonic (£9); use this morning and evening for a few weeks leading up to your wedding to strengthen and protect your lashes against breaking give them a thicker, fuller and glossier appearance.

Go for a waterproof mascara to ensure that it is tear and sweat proof! For volume Lancome Hypnose  (£20.50) is super and has a waterproof version; whilst for length, Yves Saint Laurent's Mascara Singulier Nuit Blanche (£22) is fabulous.

Check out our article on mascara types for further recommendations.

imageYou may also wish to use a primer underneath your eyeshadow to keep them from creasing and the colour fresh. NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (£18) is the by far the best eye primer we've come across and really does improve the staying power of all eyeshadow types.

Go for long-wear, waterproof eyeshadows such as Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Cream Shadows (£16.50) which come in a range of stunning colours but Beach Honey (all over) and Beach Bronze (socket line)  are particularly fitting for a natural beach wedding look!

It is best to use a concealer or cream eyeshadow brush to apply cream shadows. Bobbi Brown's Cream Shadow Brush (£23) is the perfect imagetool.

For eyeshadow application tips see our article on how to apply eyeshadow.

As with mascara and eyeshadow, a waterproof formula eyeliner will be long-lasting and smudge proof. Yves Saint Laurent's Dessin Du Regard - Waterproof Longwear Eye Pencils (£18) are easy to apply creating a soft finish and come in a range of summery bright colours as well as black and brown. For liquid eyeliner, Estee Lauder Double Wear Zero-Smudge Liquid Eyeliner (£18) has 15-hour staying power and is very easy to apply. It also comes in four shades - black, brown, bronze and grey.

imageManicure and Pedicure kit

You could invest in a manicure and pedicure kit such as Boots No7 Rechargeable Manicure Set (£34.99) to shape nails and soften skin. Whilst a foot exfoliator such as Natio Wellness Foot Scrub (£9.50) and a good moisturiser will improve your feet and hands condition. Available in lavender, citrus and rose, Jurlique hand cream (£33) has a lovely scent and is the perfect aid for dry hands.  While Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant (£25) is a beauty must-have for cracked heels and dry, chapped skin.

imageOpt for a subtle nail colour on your hands so that any imperfections or chips are hard to see in wedding photos. We love O.P.I's Fairytale Bride Collection; in particular Otherwise Engaged (£10.50). Use a top coat to protect your nails and prevent chipping.

Believe it or not your hair also needs protecting from environmental assaults, particularly coloured hair which can fade with too much sun exposure - look for colour protect and haircare products with SPF's. For an extra boost on your wedding morning use L'Oreal Elvive's Full Restore 5 60 Second Saviour hair mask; as the name suggests it only needs to be left on the hair for 60 seconds and transforms the fibres of hair's damaged by sun, sea and sand to leave it looking silky, soft and glossy.
