Pretty in Pink
Everyone’s favourite girly shade is set to be a big hit for the summer, be it sugary, dusky or 80’s disco à la Debbie Harry. This look was nowhere more prominent than at the s/s11 Ashish show, with an abundance of vibrant pink lips and candyfloss-coloured cheeks. “It’s a tribute to Americana, Rodeo girls and Miss Rodeo competitions. Trashy but beautiful,” explains makeup artist Georgina Graham. Elsewhere Jean-Pierre Braganza featured shocking pink swept over the browbone and extended right back to the ‘kidney bean’ shape at the top of the cheekbones, complemented by bold black lashes. Artist Terry Barber describes his inspiration for the look. “It’s Nico in The Velvet Underground meets Guy Bourdin’s photographs – quite tough but very chic.”
If there were an award for the prettiest pink beauty shade for this summer it would have to go to L'Oreal's new Colour Riche Made For Me lipstick in Tender Rose 303 - a shimmery icy rose pink, perfect for sixties-inspired babydoll lips. And Chanel's latest lipstick Rouge Coco Shine in Boy is also a stunning sugary but deeper rosy shade of pink. Benefit’s new Bella Bamba blusher colours cheeks a beautiful sparkly neon pink, which will look stunning against tanned skin. A perfect partner for sugar pink makeup is a fresh pair of peepers - try 3 Custom Colour’s Clarifying Pencil inside the lower lash line and blended beneath the inner corner of the eye for instant illumination.
This summer, artists are especially focused on the texture of the skin and the shape of the face, with super shiny cheekbones and plenty of bronzer underneath, complete with dewy skin and glossy lips. Such was the look at Costume National as artist Sally Branka explains. “It’s got a feeling of the early seventies New York underground to it – a bit Bowie, strong and sculptural, whilst also being sophisticated with a lot of shading and lip gloss.”
A tiny blob of Moa The Green Balm (rubbed into the palms and smoothed over the face) is the best way to give skin a natural healthy glow, whilst a dab of RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer on the apples of the cheeks adds that finishing touch of polish. And for shimmering lips, a perfect choice is NARS lipgloss in Super Orgasm, which includes tiny gold particles for extra shine.
Here Comes the Sun

Forget pale and interesting- this season’s catwalks saw beautiful sun-kissed skin paired with dark smoky eyes, plenty of bronzer and nude lips. The deep tans at the Blumarine show were inspired by the idea of a “luxurious bohemian girl sailing around the med, wearing a fabulous leopard print kaftan!” as makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury illustrates.
Rather than taking the risk of tanning naturally, slap on the SPF 30 with Invisible Zinc’s Tinted Daywear sunscreen for the face, which delivers a beautiful golden glow whilst protecting against those UV rays. And Guerlain’s Terracotta Moisturising Bronzing Powder swept over the cheeks will add that perfect finishing touch.
Clarins' summer makeup collection "Mosaique" (available from June) has some lovely natural nude and fresh coloured lip balms; the Smooth Crystal Lip Balm in Coral is ideal for beach chic. We also love Sisley's Phyto Lip Shine in Nude.
For smoking eyes, L'Oreal's new Colour Infallible eyeshadows have some stunning shades including the smoky Pebble Grey - team it with a soft brown or grey kohl to get smouldering eyes.
Summer Brights and Metallics
There’s no doubt about it – when the sun’s out, we’re all in a good mood! Reflect your perky demeanour with a bold nail colour such as Nail Girls Pink 20 (Nailgirls.co.uk) – a blindingly bright neon inspired by the maxi dresses at Paul & Joe, or Dior's summer shade Aloha which comes with a clear top coat; it's a sizzling tangerine shade similar to the orange lace that was all over the Christopher Kane spring/summer catwalk.
Tangerine and Fuchsia may be bold and daring colours but they are certainly hot this season for lips as well as nails.
Meanwhile, metallics are also in fashion, with silver and gold, as well as colourful shimmer shades seen on the catwalks. O.P.I's summer collection Texas has a heavenly mix of brights and metallics, with a particular favourite being It's Totally Fort Worth It (Shimmery Lavendar Grey).
Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess summer collection features some mouth-wateringly delicious brights from coral lips to turquoise eyes. The limited edition Island Oasis eyeshadow palette has some surf and sand inspired shades and is a must-have for all holiday bound makeup bags this year.
This season we’re binning the mascara and faking it with false lashes, as seen on the catwalks at Dior and Dolce & Gabbana among others. For a natural looking flutter, Eylure’s Naturalites are made from natural fibres and come in varying lengths to mirror your own lashes, so your look is more Sophia Loren than RuPaul!
Or if you want to get a tad more creative, PaperSelf eyelashes (Asos.com) offer a host of weird and wonderful paper ‘lashes,’ with designs including deers, butterflies and peacocks. See our article on wearing false eyelashes.
