Hiya,

I am wearing a red bridesmaids dress at my friend's wedding and the plan is to wear red lipstick as well.  I am very blonde and pale and not used to wearing bright colours. I am worried that a red lipstick will look to bright and tarty on me. Any advice on which red lipstick suits blondes?

Thanks, Faye x

Hi Faye,

I think that there is a red lipstick to suit everyone. It depends on your skin tone and hair colour – is it cool or warm? Are you a honey or icy shade of blonde? If you have a warm skin tone and warm hair colour then look for reds with warm brown or orange undertones such as 'siren red' or 'burnt orange red'. If you have a cool skin tone and hair colour look for reds with blue / purple / pink undertones. If your skin tone and hair tone are opposites, next look at your eye colour – blue eyes often suit cooler tones and brown eyes warmer. Avoid dark brown or plummy reds as these can be too dramatic and unflattering for blondes and make you look very pale. Good luck at the wedding :)

Hello Faye,

Welcome to the forum!

Blondes can certainly have fun wearing red!

I would match the colour to the dress for the best effect! But I absolutely love Clarins' new Rouge Prodige lipstick in Red Prodige if you are looking for a particular lippie. It's featured in our article on glamorous makeup looks :)

Try to match the color with your natural lip shade – if it is rosy go for a rosy red; if it is pinky beige go for a pinky red.  Either way, the lip color shouldn't be more than a few shades darker than your natural lip color. Revlon have some great red lipsticks.

Are you getting the makeup professionally done on the day? If so the makeup artist should be able to show you which lipstick will suit you. If not, I would visit a beauty counter and get an adviser to try out some different reds on you.  Red can be a matter of trial and error. Good luck! :) x
